At Oma Jim Explores, every trip tells a story…
And trust me, Kigali, Rwanda gave us a story we will never forget.

If you’ve never been to Rwanda before, let me prepare your mind…

Because the major means of transportation in Kigali is not Uber.
Not Bolt.
Not buses.

It is… motorcycles and bicycles.

Yes, you read that correctly.

BICYCLES.

But What About Buses?

Of course, buses exist in Kigali, but they are scarce.

And when they pass?
They are usually fully loaded — packed with people standing and squeezed inside.

So most people just hop on a bike and move on with their day like it’s the most normal thing in the world.

Now Here’s Where It Gets Interesting… Rwanda Is a Hilly Country

Nigeria is popularly called the Giant of Africa 🇳🇬
But Rwanda? Rwanda is called…

The Country of a Thousand Hills. 🇷🇼

And they didn’t exaggerate.

The roads are steep, the hills are plenty, and if you’re not careful…

The moment you enter a bike, you might just have a panic attack.

Because tell me why I’m on a bike and we’re climbing a hill that looks like Mount Everest.

But Surprisingly… Their Riders Are Extremely Skilled

As scary as it sounds, the bike riders are very experienced.

And honestly, it wasn’t surprising.

Because Rwanda is a country where institutions function.

There are traffic cameras.
Rules are enforced.
Offenders face real consequences.

So everyone behaves.

And since we were tourists, they were even more careful with us.

Helmet First — No Argument

Before you even enter the bike, you must wear a helmet.

No helmet?
No movement.

Simple.

The Bicycle Is 4 Times Cheaper Than the Motorbike

Now this shocked us.

A bicycle ride is about four times cheaper than a motorbike ride.

And some people actually choose the bicycle.

Which made me wonder…

How Do These People Have That Kind of Strength??

Because listen…

Rwanda is not flat.
The roads are steep.
The hills are plenty.

So imagine pedaling a bicycle uphill…

While carrying a passenger.

My God.

That is not transport.
That is gym membership.

No wonder Rwandan men are slim and always in shape.

Our Plan Was to Use Bikes Throughout… But Plans Changed

Initially, we wanted to use bikes for the entire trip.

But the plan changed because some of our travelers were interested in real estate and were looking for houses to buy.

So our driver was basically on standby, moving them from place to place to check properties and deals.

These pictures you’re seeing are some of the few moments they still got to experience the bikes.
